WWE Royal Rumble 2017 - Results

Kickoff Show Results

Naomi, Nikki Bella and Becky Lynch defeat Alexa Bliss, Mickie James, and Natalya
Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson defeat Cesaro and Sheamus to win the Raw Tag Team Championships
Nia Jax defeated Sasha Banks

The kickoff show was mostly about the women. It was somewhat surprising that Bliss didn't defend the title instead she was in a 6 woman tag match. Mickie James has a pretty good character and great in the ring, but they just need to utilize her like she is a star. In somewhat of a much needed surprise, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson became the new champions. This was the right move, but there feud leading up to Wrestlemania will determine if they have staying power. The third match had Nia Jax defeat Sasha Banks, which just keeps the feud going a little bit longer.

Royal Rumble

Charlotte defeats Bayley to retain Raw Women's Championship - Charlotte winning was the right move because no need to end her pay-per-view winning streak. The only bad thing about the win was that Bayley lost clean. It should been more of a dirty win, even as simple as feet on the ropes.

Kevin Owens defeated Roman Reigns to retain the Universal Championship - The match was the second best on the card, and it ended exactly how it should have. I was surprised that Reigns didn't win the title because of the push WWE keeps giving him. The result and small involvement of Jericho was great to see. The only thing i thought might happen is a turn for Jericho to set up Wrestlemania match, but that should come soon enough. The match itself had 3 huge spots in it. First was the splash from Owens to Reigns onto the table. Second was the Owens pushed into a bunch of chairs. Third seen Strowman slam Reigns on the table but it didn't break. It appeared to be setting Strowman and Reigns up for a fight eventually, but a spot in the Rumble showed Undertaker and Reigns as a possibility.

Neville defeats Rich Swann to become new Cruiserweight Champion - Neville is easily the best worker and talker in the division. The change of champions was the right move, but will it pay off for ratings in the long run. It'll be interesting to see who the future contender will be.

John Cena defeats AJ Styles to become new WWE World Champion - The match was one of the best matches that has ever happened. One of the main reasons for that was all the moves that were in it. It had such a wide variety of moves that I'd never seen them pull off before. AJ Styles is by far the best in the business in ring and on the mic right now. The only reason for this to be a smart move to lose the title is if they have something big setup for Wrestlemania.

Royal Rumble Match won by Randy Orton - The match itself could have been much better. Chris Jericho stayed in the match a long time but nothing really came of it. He was eliminated near the end of the match. The main downfall was the lack of surprise in the match. The only surprise was the winner of the match which was Randy Orton. Strowman, Corbin, Jericho, and Goldberg all had strong showings throughout.

Wrestlemania 33 - After Royal Rumble Predictions

Brock Lesnar Vs. Goldberg
Bayley Vs. Charlotte Vs. Sasha Banks Vs. Nia Jax
John Cena or AJ Styles Vs. Undertaker
Randy Orton Vs. Bray Wyatt
Seth Rollins Vs. Triple H
Kevin Owens Vs. Chris Jericho
Braun Strowman Vs. Roman Reigns
Andre Giant Memorial Battle Royal
Possible other matches include: United States Championship, Smackdown Women's Championship, Both Tag Titles, Cruiseweight, Finn Balor

Sports Recap - Monday, January 23

The King Not Happy

The Cleveland Cavaliers have had a rough month of January. Last night, the Cavaliers lost to a New Orleans Pelicans team without Anthony Davis. In reality, it doesn't matter what happens until the playoffs but Lebron wants more. Lebron is looking for the team to add either a point guard or a play maker to the rotation. Is this just Lebron's attempt to get some more players or is he actually concerned about the team? It looks like it is more of a way for Lebron to get management to go out and find some more pieces to the puzzle. The Cavaliers as they stand now still don't have anything to worry about. On the other hand, adding more play making to a team has never hurt. The Cavaliers need to come out of the funk before the All-Star Game just so they can get some momentum on their side. Even if it doesn't matter until playoffs, no one is a fan of losing games. Cleveland Cavaliers management it is now your move.

Duke Blue Devils Struggles Continue

The Duke Blue Devils are struggling to look anything like the number 1 ranked team that came into the season. Duke has lost 3 of their last 6 games, and are struggling both offensively and defensively. The biggest defensive problem are the bigs on the pick and roll. The communication and athletic ability to get out and back doesn't seem to be there right now. The offense has put up a decent amount of points each game but the consistency isn't there. Last night, Grayson Allen and Luke Kennard didn't start the game. The problem with that, even with Allen struggling, is that they are the two best offensive players on the team right now. Luke Kennard has struggled on defense some which could have been the reason for the change. The team needs to stay focused and Allen is better then he is playing. This team can go as Allen goes, but right now he isn't going. Duke needs to figure out the problem now or they might be surprised when the tourney comes around. It is a longshot, but at this rate losing out would make them miss the tourney.

WWE Raw Go-Home Show

The night was full of ups and downs. Raw had some more wrestles throw their names in the Royal Rumble match. The cruiserweights got quite a bit of exposure. Seth Rollins versus Triple H match was finally hinted at. What happens with that at the Royal Rumble?  Seth Rollins currently doesn't have a match at the Royal Rumble so something with Triple H is likely to happen. The interviews with Charlotte and Bayley were better then them being in the ring building the match. Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns looks to be setting up a Kevin Owens loss at the Royal Rumble. The big question is what role will Jericho play? He will be suspended above the ring in a cage, but the match is a no DQ match. They hit the nail on the head with the ending of the show. Three of the more popular superstars to ever be in the ring all in one ring, and all going to be in the rumble match. Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, and Goldberg made the night go from good to great. The setup is there, but now where do they go from here?

The G.O.A.T Podcast - Episode 23; In this episode: NFL playoffs recap, NFL Super Bowl preview, College Basketball AP top 5, and WWE Royal Rumble

WWE Royal Rumble 2017

Predictions to Win the Royal Rumble

  1. Undertaker - The Deadman is back in the Royal Rumble. Potentially could be a set up for one last title run and to determine who he will face at Wrestlemania. He is the favorite to come out victorious.

  2. Goldberg - Goldberg's return was late in 2016. He stated that he had one more title run in him.So potentially that means a victory by him would put him in contention for a title shot at Wrestlemania. The more likely scenario could be Lesnar and Goldberg eliminating each other and setting up a match.

  3. Brock Lesnar - As stated above, the same situation applies for Brock Lesnar. However, the Beast could win and go on to main event Wrestlemania.

  4. Finn Balor - The potentially returning Balor would make the most sense to win it all. He was getting a great push and won the title before the injury. It would seem to set up a match with Reigns for the title with Kevin Owens losing at the Royal Rumble. As popular as Balor is, it seems to be an easy push back in to where he left off.

  5. Braun Strowman - Strowman has been getting quite the push lately. This is my surprise pick to win the Royal Rumble. The reason is the overpowering and dominate factor the WWE is presenting him as would look good in a win. The main reason this might not happen is the fact he isn't quite ready to be in the main-event.

Wildcards - John Cena, AJ Styles, Chris Jericho, Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens

A few of theses guys already are set to have matches at the Rumble. I could see a potential loss by Cena, Styles, or Owens. One of them after the loss could enter in to the Rumble match.

    Potential Wrestlemania Matches

    Brock Lesnar Vs. Goldberg
    Bayley Vs. Charlotte
John Cena or AJ Styles Vs. Undertaker
    Randy Orton Vs. Bray Wyatt
    Seth Rollins Vs. Triple H
    Kevin Owens Vs. Chris Jericho
    Finn Balor Vs. Roman Reigns
